This project was a research assignment given to my class by my A.P. U.S. history teacher, Dr. Bradley. The assignment was to pick a current topic and trace it back through United States history. The topic must be controversial, and we had to form an opinion in our paper. My class researched and wrote three research progress reports, an outline, and a rough draft. Then, after taking a break in March to study for the A.P. test in early May, we turned in our final drafts on Wednesday, May 21, 2003. I chose the topic of Affirmative Action after I read the Newsweek Magazine on it and had a discussion about it with my father. I realized I was conflicted on this issue, and I think it is a topic that everyone should have a position on. Therefore, I decided to write about it for this paper, and hopefully in the process I would develop my own opinion about it. I also considered writing about the Electoral College but decided it was too technical a topic.

For my paper on Affirmative Action, I used many online sources and found a Newsweek Magazine whose cover topic was Affirmative Action (see Works Cited) which was extremely helpful. I began to form my own opinions on the topic by reading those of others, and I came to be very adamant about the continued use of Affirmative Action in college admissions. I hope that you will send me your comments and opinions using the Contact Me link, located on this page and on the Affirmative Action home page. I found that Affirmative Action is a controversial topic that makes a compelling paper, but if you are writing a shorter paper (under 7 pages) I would suggest you pick a topic with less facets. Thanks for visiting my page, and enjoy!
